Sitar Arts Center

Provides visual, performing and digital arts education for underserved children and youth in DC.

AREA - DC

AGE RANGE - 14 and above

What is Sitar Arts Center?

Sitar Arts Center serves families in Ward 1 and throughout Washington, DC who have unequal access to quality arts education and enriching out-of-school-time opportunities. They do not turn anyone away for inability to pay and ensure that 80% of its student body is from families with low-income. Sitar currently serves more than 900 students each year.

How do I volunteer?

Sitar’s volunteers and teaching artists teach more than 80 classes each week in the visual arts, dance, creative writing, drama, music, digital arts, and approximately 100 private music lessons. These local visual and performing artists who volunteer their time and talents enable Sitar to achieve its mission. The faculty becomes mentors and role models for students, often forging meaningful and lasting relationships. Information on becoming a volunteer teacher can be found here.

If you are interested in assisting with various non-teaching volunteer needs at the Center, including lobby hosting, help with administrative tasks, mailings, Center maintenance, event support, or a volunteer internship, you may submit a volunteer application.

There are also volunteer opportunities for high school students, and they must first enroll at Sitar as students and register for at least one teen arts class in addition to registering for a “community service job.” During the registration appointment students will work with the Senior Director of Programs to select a community service job from a list of available jobs that best fits their skills and interests as well as the needs of the Center.
