AREA - D.C.

AGE RANGE - 15 and above

What is SED Center?

For over 50 years, SED Center has provided bilingual, high-quality, academic programs to D.C. residents mostly from low-income backgrounds, empowering them to navigate the District's professional and social environment by building the knowledge, skills, and confidence that can help them lead rewarding lives.

How do I volunteer?

There are several ways to volunteer for the SED Center. Volunteers should fill out this volunteer form.

At the Children's Program, offered Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., volunteers can be a teacher's aide helping children ages 3 month to 2 years old with nap time, meal times, diaper changing, using the toilet, washing, and dressing.

In the Preschool, volunteers can serve as a teacher's aide in the bilingual preschool helping children ages 2.5 to 4 years old get a great start on their education. Volunteers interact with children by reading stories, teaching and playing games and songs, working with children in small group activities designed by the teachers, and supervising the children at the park.

In the Adult Program - which runs Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 10 am - 12 pm and/or 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday 10 am - 1 pm and/or 1:15 pm - 4:15 pm - volunteers act as teacher's aides for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. Through volunteer participation in small group work, students receive more interaction and exposure to native speakers of English. Knowledge of Spanish is not required to volunteer with this program. Experience with ESOL instruction is not a requirement, as SED provides a series of orientations and workshops to give volunteers the necessary skills to perform their jobs as ESOL teacher's aides.

Fundraising: the SED Center is also always in need of volunteers to help in fundraising efforts. They are looking for talented individuals who can help us with data entry, grant proposal writing, prospect research, copy editing, and their annual fundraising event, the Pub Games.

Communication: SED is looking for volunteers and interns to help them to communicate about all the great things that the SED Center does in the community. Volunteers who can help us with website design and content, social media, PR, copy editing photography, graphic design, and translation would be helpful.
