Homeward Trail Animal Rescue

Provides pet adoption for abandoned and other needy cats and dogs in the DC area.

AREA - D.C.

AGE RANGE - 18 and above in most cases

What is Homeward Trail?

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue provides pet adoption in Virginia, Washington, DC and Maryland. They find homes for dogs and cats rescued from animal shelters, whose owners can no longer care for them, abandoned hunting dogs, and animals who have been injured, abused and neglected. They have helped internationally as well, rescuing dogs from Thailand, China, Korea, Russia, Peru, Greece and Kuwait. They also have a full-time program in Puerto Rico, rescuing more than 450 dogs and providing Trap-Neuter-Return services for more than 500 cats.

How do I volunteer?

There are many ways to volunteer for Homeward Trail, including fostering animals, application screening, transportation of animals, events, and fundraising. They are also open to new volunteer ideas and can be reached here.

Most volunteering opportunities are for ages 18 and above, but Homer's Helper program has a few chances for younger folks to pitch in to: make signs or flyers for upcoming events, bring the flyers to local businesses in your area and ask permission to post them, make signs or flyers advertising a specific animal (older dogs or pets with special needs that are harder to place), and to help publicize events and adoptable animals on your Facebook, blog, or Twitter account.
