Sarah's Circle

Affordable housing for low income seniors.

AREA - D.C.

AGE RANGE - All ages

What is Sarah's Circle?

Founded in 1983, Sarah's Circle is an award-winning affordable housing and community center for low income DC seniors.

Residents of Sarah's Circle range in age from their late 50s to late 80s. Each month, they survive on incomes at or below 30 percent of area median income, which is currently just $25,500 per year for a single-person household. Most live alone, having raised families, suffered the loss of a spouse, and struggled to find their place in the world as they age. A few work part-time. Many volunteer and contribute to their community through congregations and local civic groups, and are proud to call themselves DC residents. Some are veterans. Many more are military spouses or parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents of members of the armed services. Residents represent every race and some come from as far away as Africa, Central America, and South America.

How do I volunteer?

Whether you are looking for a recurring opportunity or a one-time day project, Sarah's Circle can match its needs to your skills, availability, and interests with a volunteer opportunity.

Sarah's Circle loves to work with groups who want to lead games, art projects, and other activities with its residents. If your group prefers weekday evening opportunities, you can combine that with a dinner event to provide the opportunity for your participants to help cook for, serve, and eat with the residents. You can also help with weekday lunch service and clean-up.

If you are volunteering solo, Sarah's Circle is always looking for passionate people who want to serve older adults and who have unique talents to share with our residents. You can develop your own program and curriculum and can come as often as you want. Most programs occur at least once per month but don’t let that deter you – if you have an idea, reach out.
